Connecting Coventry: One year on – the new Coventry Railway Station

Coventry Railway Station, adjacent to TWO FRIARGATE, one year on from its ambitious redevelopment to improve passenger capacity and experience

This month marks one year since Coventry Railway Station completed its £82 million transformation. Boosting travel to and from the city, the station has facilitated growth in Coventry’s business and culture sectors. This is excellent news for the adjacent TWO FRIARGATE offices in Coventry city centre, as it nears completion.

On track for success

Part of the Friargate Masterplan, the ambitious redevelopment is one of the fastest growing stations outside of London, and has brought passenger experience up to the highest standards in the UK.

The transformation created a purpose-built new building for the station with a striking entrance to act as a renewed focal point for Coventry. The station now includes a new multi-storey car park, a secure cycle storage facility with space for cargo bikes, new retail units and improved accessibility to all four platforms.

Since opening in March 2022, significant improvements in passenger capacity and customer experience have brought about a 160% increase in traffic to and from Coventry. This is encouraging growth across the city, by providing excellent travel connections to London, Birmingham city centre and Birmingham Airport, which offers regular flights to over 90 domestic and international destinations.

Facilitating Friargate

The Friargate development, Coventry’s premier business district, has also reaped the benefits of Coventry Railway Station’s ambitious redevelopment. The Friargate Masterplan is developing at pace, with construction well underway on Hotel Indigo Coventry, a boutique 100-bedroomed 4-star hotel, set to open in late 2023.

Just 100 metres away from TWO FRIARGATE, the city’s most sustainable office building, the station is integral to Coventry’s new transport hub. The Bus Interchange at Central Six and Coventry Railway Station provide excellent public transport links across the West Midlands, acting as a major hub in the national public transport network.

Coventry’s state-of-the-art office building

Since the station’s opening, TWO FRIARGATE has made significant progress on its construction. The new premier office building is situated immediately to the north of the railway station, just a few steps away, providing occupiers with immediate access to the transport hub.

Due to complete this summer, TWO FRIARGATE has seen a strong level of interest. Enhanced by its exceptional public transport links, TWO FRIARGATE enables occupiers to achieve their ESG objectives and accommodate future growth within a state-of-the-art office building designed for modern working.

The building has already been awarded a Platinum Certification from WiredScore – a globally recognised accolade making it the city’s most connected building. It is also expected to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating, cementing TWO FRIARGATE’s position as one of Coventry’s most exciting developments.

Green investment

A year on from the transformation of Coventry Railway Station, investment in the city’s public transport network remains a priority. Coventry is on track to become the UK’s first all-electric bus city, and the Coventry Very Light Rail system is set to provide green, affordable cross-city transport upon completion. Coventry has also taken full advantage of the West Midlands Cycle Hire programme, providing a quick and easy, green way to travel around the city.
